राजा धृतराष्ट्र ने कहा - रण- लालसा से धर्म- भू, कुरुक्षेत्र में एकत्र हो । मेरे सुतों ने, पाण्डवों ने क्या किया संजय कहो ॥ १ । १ ॥
- Dhritarâshtra said: Tell me, O Sanjaya! Assembled on Kurukshetra, the centre of religious activity, desirous to fight, what indeed did my people and the Pândavas do? 1 (Ⅰ)

- "This our army defended by Bhishma (is) impossible to be counted, but that army of theirs, defended by Bhima (is) easy to number. 10 (Ⅰ)

- That powerful, oldest of the Kurus, Bhishma the grandsire, in order to cheer Duryodhana, now sounded aloud a lion-roar and blew his conch. 12 (Ⅰ)

फिर शंख भेरी ढोल आनक गोमुखे चहुँ ओर से । सब युद्ध बाजे एक दम बजने लगे ध्वनि घोर से ॥ १ । १३ ॥
- Then following Bhishma, conches and kettle-drums, tabors, trumpets and cowhorns blared forth suddenly from the Kaurava side and the noise was tremendous. (Ⅰ)

तब कृष्ण अर्जुन श्वेत घोड़ों से सजे रथ पर चढ़े । निज दिव्य शंखों को बजाते वीरवर आगे बढ़े ॥ १ । १४ ॥
- Then, also, Mâdhava and Pândava, stationed in their magnificent chariot yoked with white horses, blew their divine conches with a furious noise. (Ⅰ)

श्रीकृष्ण अर्जुन ' पाञ्चजन्य' व ' देवदत्त' गुंजा उठे । फिर भीमकर्मा भीम ' पौण्ड्र' निनाद करने में जुटे ॥ १ । १५ ॥
- Hrishikesha blew the Pânchajanya, Dhananjaya, the Devadatta, and Vrikodara, the doer of terrific deeds, his large conch Paundra. (Ⅰ)

- King Yudhishthira, son of Kunti, blew the conch named Anantavijaya, and Nakula and Sahadeva, their Sughosha and Manipushpaka. (Ⅰ)

- The expert bowman, king of Kâshi, and the great warrior Shikhandi, Dhrishtadyumna and Virâta and the unconquered Sâtyaki; (Ⅰ)

- O Lord of Earth! Drupada and the sons of Draupadi, and the mighty-armed son of Subhadrâ, all, also blew each his own conch. (Ⅰ)

सब कौरवों को देख रण का साज सब पूरा किये । शस्त्रादि चलने के समय अर्जुन कपिध्वज धनु लिये ॥ १ । २० ॥
- Then, O Lord of Earth, seeing Dhritarâshtra's party standing marshalled and the shooting about to begin, that Pândava whose ensign was the monkey, raising his bow, said the following words to Krishna: 20 (Ⅰ)

श्रीकृष्ण से कहने लगे आगे बढ़ा रथ लीजिये । दोनों दलों के बीच में अच्युत! खड़ा कर दीजिये ॥ १ । २१ ॥
- Arjuna said:Place my chariot, O Achyuta! between the two armies (Ⅰ)

करलूं निरीक्षण युद्ध में जो जो जुड़े रणधीर हैं । इस युद्ध में माधव! मुझे जिन पर चलने तीर हैं ॥ १ । २२ ॥
- that I may see those who stand here prepared for war. On this eve of battle (let me know) with whom I have to fight. (Ⅰ)

मैं देख लूं रण हेतु जो आये यहाँ बलवान् हैं । जो चाहते दुर्बुद्धि दुर्योधन- कुमति- कल्याण हैं ॥ १ । २३ ॥
- For I desire to observe those who are assembled here for fight, wishing to please the evil-minded Duryodhana by taking his side on this battle-field. 23 (Ⅰ)

संजय ने कहा - - श्रीकृष्ण ने जब गुडाकेश- विचार, भारत! सुन लिया । दोनों दलों के बीच में जाकर खड़ा रथ को किया ॥ १ । २४ ॥
- Sanjaya said:Commanded thus by Gudâkesha, Hrishikesha, O Bhârata, drove that grandest of chariots to a place between the two hosts, (Ⅰ)

राजा, रथी, श्रीभीष्म, द्रोणाचार्य के जा सामने । लो देखलो! कौरव कटक, अर्जुन! कहा भगवान् ने ॥ १ । २५ ॥
- facing Bhishma, Drona and all the rulers of the earth, and then spoke thus, "Behold, O Pârtha, all the Kurus gathered together!" (Ⅰ)

तब पार्थ ने देखा वहाँ, सब हैं स्वजन बूढ़े बड़े । आचार्य भाई पुत्र मामा, पौत्र प्रियजन हैं खड़े ॥ १ । २६ ॥
- Then saw Pârtha stationed there in both the armies, grandfathers, fathers-in-law and uncles, brothers and cousins, his own and their sons and grandsons, and comrades, teachers, and other friends as well. (Ⅰ)

स्नेही ससुर देखे खड़े, कौन्तेय ने देखा जहाँ । दोनों दलों में देखकर, प्रिय बन्धु बान्धव हो वहाँ ॥ १ । २७ ॥
- Then he, the son of Kunti, seeing all those kinsmen stationed in their ranks, spoke thus sorrowfully, filled with deep compassion. (Ⅰ)

कहने लगे इस भाँति तब, होकर कृपायुत खिन्न से । हे कृष्ण! रण में देखकर, एकत्र मित्र अभिन्न- से ॥ १ । २८ ॥
- Arjuna said:Seeing, O Krishna, these my kinsmen gathered here, eager for fight, (Ⅰ)

होते शिथिल हैं अङ्ग सारे, सूख मेरा मुख रहा । तन काँपता थर- थर तथा रोमाञ्च होता है महा ॥ १ । २९ ॥
- my limbs fail me, and my mouth is parched up. I shiver all over, and my hair stands on end. The bow Gândiva slips from my hand, and my skin burns. 29 (Ⅰ)

गाण्डीव गिरता हाथ से, जलता समस्त शरीर है । मैं रह नहीं पाता खड़ा, मन भ्रमित और अधीर है ॥ १ । ३० ॥
- Neither, O Keshava, can I stand upright. My mind is in a whirl. And I see adverse omens. (Ⅰ)

केशव! सभी विपरीत लक्षण दिख रहे, मन म्लान है । रण में स्वजन सब मारकर, दिखता नहीं कल्याण है ॥ १ । ३१ ॥
- Neither, O Krishna, do I see any good in killing these my own people in battle. I desire neither victory nor empire, nor yet pleasure. (Ⅰ)

इच्छा नहीं जय राज्य की है, व्यर्थ ही सुख भोग है । गोविन्द! जीवन राज्य- सुख का क्या हमें उपयोग है ॥ १ । ३२ ॥
- Of what avail is dominion to us, of what avail are pleasures and even life, if these, O Govinda! (Ⅰ)

जिनके लिये सुख- भोग सम्पति राज्य की इच्छा रही । लड़ने खड़े हैं आश तज धन और जीवन की वही ॥ १ । ३३ ॥
- for whose sake it is desired that empire, enjoyment and pleasure should be ours, themselves stand here in battle, having renounced life and wealth— (Ⅰ)

आचार्यगण, मामा, पितामह, सुत, सभी बूड़े बड़े । साले, ससुर, स्नेही, सभी प्रिय पौत्र सम्बन्धी खड़े ॥ १ । ३४ ॥
- Teachers, uncles, sons and also grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law, besides other kinsmen. (Ⅰ)

क्या भूमि, मधुसूदन! मिले त्रैलोक्य का यदि राज्य भी । वे मारलें पर शस्त्र मैं उन पर न छोड़ूँगा कभी ॥ १ । ३५ ॥
- Even though these were to kill me, O slayer of Madhu, I could not wish to kill them, not even for the sake of dominion over the three worlds, how much less for the sake of the earth! (Ⅰ)

इनको जनार्दन मारकर होगा हमें संताप ही । हैं आततायी मारने से पर लगेगा पाप ही ॥ १ । ३६ ॥
- What pleasure indeed could be ours, O Jnanârdana, from killing these sons of Dhritarâshtra? Sin only could take hold of us by the slaying of these felons. 36 (Ⅰ)

माधव! उचित वध है न इनका बन्धु हैं अपने सभी । निज बन्धुओं को मारकर क्या हम सुखी होंगे कभी ॥ १ । ३७ ॥
- Therefore ought we not to kill our kindred, the sons of Dhritarâshtra. For how could we, O Mâdhava, gain happiness by the slaying of our own kinsmen? (Ⅰ)

मति मन्द उनकी लोभ से, दिखता न उनको आप है । कुल- नाश से क्या दोष, प्रिय- जन- द्रोह से क्या पाप है ॥ १ । ३८ ॥
- Though these, with understanding overpowered by greed, see no evil due to decay of families, and no sin in hostility to friends, (Ⅰ)

कुल- नाश दोषों का जनार्दन! जब हमें सब ज्ञान है । फिर क्यों न ऐसे पाप से बचना भला भगवान है ॥ १ । ३९ ॥
- why should we, O Janârdana, who see clearly the evil due to the decay of families, not turn away from this sin? (Ⅰ)

कुल नष्ट होते भ्रष्ट होता कुल- सनातन- धर्म है । जब धर्म जाता आ दबाता पाप और अधर्म है ॥ १ । ४० ॥
- On the decay of a family the immemorial religious rites of that family die out. On the destruction of spirituality, impiety further overwhelms the whole of the family. (Ⅰ)

जब वृद्धि होती पाप की कुल की बिगड़ती नारियाँ । हे कृष्ण! फलती फूलती तब वर्णसंकर क्यारियाँ ॥ १ । ४१ ॥
- On the prevalence of impiety, O Krishna, the women of the family become corrupt; and women being corrupted, there arises, O Vârshneya, intermingling of castes. (Ⅰ)

कुलघातकी को और कुल को ये गिराते पाप में । होता न तर्पण पिण्ड यों पड़ते पितर संताप में ॥ १ । ४२ ॥
- Admixture of castes, indeed, is for the hell of the family and the destroyers of the family; their ancestors fall, deprived of the offerings of rice-ball and water. 42 (Ⅰ)

कुलघातकों के वर्णसंकर- कारकी इस पाप से । सारे सनातन, जाति, कुल के धर्म मिटते आप से ॥ १ । ४३ ॥
- By these misdeeds of the destroyers of the family, bringing about confusion of castes, are the immemorial religious rites of the caste and the family destroyed. (Ⅰ)

इस भाँति से कुल- धर्म जिनके कृष्ण होते भ्रष्ट हैं । कहते सुना है वे सदा पाते नरक में कष्ट हैं ॥ १ । ४४ ॥
- We have heard, O Janârdana, that inevitable is the dwelling in hell of those men in whose families religious practices have been destroyed. (Ⅰ)

हम राज्य सुख के लोभ से हा! पाप यह निश्चय किये । उद्यत हुए सम्बन्धियों के प्राण लेने के लिये ॥ १ । ४५ ॥
- Alas, we are involved in a great sin, in that we are prepared to slay our kinsmen, from greed of the pleasures of a kingdom! (Ⅰ)

यह ठीक हो यदि शस्त्र ले मारें मुझे कौरव सभी । निःशस्त्र हो मैं छोड़ दूँ करना सभी प्रतिकार भी ॥ १ । ४६ ॥
- Verily, if the sons of Dhritarâshtra, weapons in hand, were to slay me, unresisting and unarmed, in the battle, that would be better for me. (Ⅰ)

संजय ने कहा - - रणभूमि में इस भाँति कहकर पार्थ धनु- शर छोड़के । अति शोक से व्याकुल हुए बैठे वहीँ मुख मोड़के ॥ १ । ४७ ॥
- Sanjaya said: Speaking thus in the midst of the battle-field, Arjuna casting away his bow and arrows, sank down on the seat of his chariot, with his mind distressed with sorrow. (Ⅰ)
