When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
- Veux-tu poursuivre du regard ce qui va disparaître? Car la richesse se fait des ailes, Et comme l'aigle, elle prend son vol vers les cieux. (Ⅱ) - ἐὰν ἐπιστήση̨ς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτόν οὐδαμου̃ φανει̃ται κατεσκεύασται γὰρ αὐτω̨̃ πτέρυγες ὥσπερ ἀετου̃ καὶ ὑποστρέφει εἰς τὸν οἰ̃κον του̃ προεστηκότος αὐτου̃ (Ⅲ) - Ne erigas oculos tuos ad opes quas non potes habere,/ quia facient sibi pennas quasi aquilæ, et volabunt in cælum./ (Ⅳ) - 5 ׃23 *התעוף **התעיף עיניך בו ואיננו כי עשה יעשה לו כנפים כנשר *ועיף **יעוף השמים פ (Ⅴ)

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
- Ne déplace pas la borne ancienne, Et n'entre pas dans le champ des orphelins; (Ⅱ) - μὴ μεταθη̨̃ς ὅρια αἰώνια εἰς δὲ κτη̃μα ὀρφανω̃ν μὴ εἰσέλθη̨ς (Ⅲ) - Ne attingas parvulorum terminos,/ et agrum pupillorum ne introëas :/ (Ⅳ) - 10 ׃23 אל תסג גבול עולם ובשדי יתומים אל תבא (Ⅴ)

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
- Pour ceux qui s'attardent auprès du vin, Pour ceux qui vont déguster du vin mêlé. (Ⅱ) - οὐ τω̃ν ἐγχρονιζόντων ἐν οἴνοις οὐ τω̃ν ἰχνευόντων που̃ πότοι γίνονται (Ⅲ) - nonne his qui commorantur in vino,/ et student calicibus epotandis ?/ (Ⅳ) - 30 ׃23 למאחרים על היין לבאים לחקר ממסך (Ⅴ)

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
- Ne regarde pas le vin qui paraît d'un beau rouge, Qui fait des perles dans la coupe, Et qui coule aisément. (Ⅱ) - μὴ μεθύσκεσθε οἴνω̨ ἀλλὰ ὁμιλει̃τε ἀνθρώποις δικαίοις καὶ ὁμιλει̃τε ἐν περιπάτοις ἐὰν γὰρ εἰς τὰς φιάλας καὶ τὰ ποτήρια δω̨̃ς τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου ὕστερον περιπατήσεις γυμνότερος ὑπέρου (Ⅲ) - Ne intuearis vinum quando flavescit,/ cum splenduerit in vitro color ejus :/ ingreditur blande,/ (Ⅳ) - 31 ׃23 אל תרא יין כי יתאדם כי יתן *בכיס **בכוס עינו יתהלך במישרים (Ⅴ)

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
- Tu seras comme un homme couché au milieu de la mer, Comme un homme couché sur le sommet d'un mât: (Ⅱ) - καὶ κατακείση̨ ὥσπερ ἐν καρδία̨ θαλάσσης καὶ ὥσπερ κυβερνήτης ἐν πολλω̨̃ κλύδωνι (Ⅲ) - Et eris sicut dormiens in medio mari,/ et quasi sopitus gubernator, amisso clavo./ (Ⅳ) - 34 ׃23 והיית כשכב בלב ים וכשכב בראש חבל (Ⅴ)

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
