Praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being,
- Alhamdu lillahi rabbi alAAalameena (Ⅰ)
- The Beneficent, the Merciful, (Ⅱ)
- In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. (Ⅲ)
- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ (Ⅳ)
- Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds; (Ⅵ)
56. 1  
When the Terror descends
- Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAatu (Ⅰ)
- When the Inevitable Event comes to pass - (Ⅱ)
- When the event befalleth - (Ⅲ)
- بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ (Ⅳ)
- When the Event inevitable cometh to pass, (Ⅵ)
56. 2  
(and none denies its descending)
- Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathibatun (Ⅰ)
- There is no denying that it will come - (Ⅱ)
- There is no denying that it will befall - (Ⅲ)
- لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ (Ⅳ)
- Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming. (Ⅵ)
56. 3  
abasing, exalting,
- Khafidatun rafiAAatun (Ⅰ)
- Abasing some, exalting others. (Ⅱ)
- Abasing (some), exalting (others); (Ⅲ)
- خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ (Ⅳ)
- (Many) will it bring low; (many) will it exalt; (Ⅵ)
56. 4  
when the earth shall be rocked
- Itha rujjati alardu rajjan (Ⅰ)
- When the earth shall be shaken to its foundations, (Ⅱ)
- When the earth is shaken with a shock (Ⅲ)
- إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا (Ⅳ)
- When the earth shall be shaken to its depths, (Ⅵ)
56. 5  
and the mountains crumbled
- Wabussati aljibalu bassan (Ⅰ)
- And the mountains shall be crumbled, (Ⅱ)
- And the hills are ground to powder (Ⅲ)
- وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا (Ⅳ)
- And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, (Ⅵ)
56. 6  
and become a dust, scattered,
- Fakanat habaan munbaththan (Ⅰ)
- So that they shall be as scattered dust. (Ⅱ)
- So that they become a scattered dust, (Ⅲ)
- فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُّنبَثًّا (Ⅳ)
- Becoming dust scattered abroad, (Ⅵ)
56. 7  
and you shall be three bands --
- Wakuntum azwajan thalathatan (Ⅰ)
- And you shall be sorted into three classes, (Ⅱ)
- And ye will be three kinds: (Ⅲ)
- وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً (Ⅳ)
- And ye shall be sorted out into three classes. (Ⅵ)
56. 8  
Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!)
- Faashabu almaymanati ma ashabu almaymanati (Ⅰ)
- First the companions of the right hand - what will be the companions of the right hand? (Ⅱ)
- (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand ? (Ⅲ)
- فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ (Ⅳ)
- Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand;- What will be the Companions of the Right Hand? (Ⅵ)
56. 9  
Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!)
- Waashabu almashamati ma ashabu almashamati (Ⅰ)
- And then the companions of the left hand - what will be the companions of the left hand? (Ⅱ)
- And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand ? (Ⅲ)
- وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ (Ⅳ)
- And the Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? (Ⅵ)
56. 10  
and the Outstrippers: the Outstrippers
- Waalssabiqoona alssabiqoona (Ⅰ)
- And those foremost (in faith) will be the foremost (in the Hereafter), (Ⅱ)
- And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race: (Ⅲ)
- وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ (Ⅳ)
- And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter). (Ⅵ)
56. 11  
those are they brought nigh the Throne,
- Olaika almuqarraboona (Ⅰ)
- These are they who are drawn nigh (to Allah), (Ⅱ)
- Those are they who will be brought nigh (Ⅲ)
- أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ (Ⅳ)
- These will be those Nearest to Allah: (Ⅵ)
56. 12  
in the Gardens of Delight
- Fee jannati alnnaAAeemi (Ⅰ)
- In the Gardens of Bliss. (Ⅱ)
- In gardens of delight; (Ⅲ)
- فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ (Ⅳ)
- In Gardens of Bliss: (Ⅵ)
56. 13  
(a throng of the ancients
- Thullatun mina alawwaleena (Ⅰ)
- A multitude of those of old, (Ⅱ)
- A multitude of those of old (Ⅲ)
- ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ (Ⅳ)
- A number of people from those of old, (Ⅵ)
56. 14  
and how few of the later folk)
- Waqaleelun mina alakhireena (Ⅰ)
- And a few of those of later times. (Ⅱ)
- And a few of those of later time. (Ⅲ)
- وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ (Ⅳ)
- And a few from those of later times. (Ⅵ)
56. 15  
upon close-wrought couches
- AAala sururin mawdoonatin (Ⅰ)
- On thrones decorated, (Ⅱ)
- On lined couches, (Ⅲ)
- عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ (Ⅳ)
- (They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones), (Ⅵ)
56. 16  
reclining upon them, set face to face,
- Muttakieena AAalayha mutaqabileena (Ⅰ)
- Reclining on them, facing one another. (Ⅱ)
- Reclining therein face to face. (Ⅲ)
- مُّتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ (Ⅳ)
- Reclining on them, facing each other. (Ⅵ)
56. 17  
immortal youths going round about them
- Yatoofu AAalayhim wildanun mukhalladoona (Ⅰ)
- Round about them shall serve youths of permanent freshness (immortal or never altering in age), (Ⅱ)
- There wait on them immortal youths (Ⅲ)
- يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ (Ⅳ)
- Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness), (Ⅵ)
56. 18  
with goblets, and ewers, and a cup from a spring
- Biakwabin waabareeqa wakasin min maAAeenin (Ⅰ)
- With goblets and ewers and a cup filled from a pure fountain; (Ⅱ)
- With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring (Ⅲ)
- بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ (Ⅳ)
- With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains: (Ⅵ)
56. 19  
(no brows throbbing, no intoxication)
- La yusaddaAAoona AAanha wala yunzifoona (Ⅰ)
- They shall not suffer with headache thereby, nor shall they get intoxicated (or exhausted), (Ⅱ)
- Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, (Ⅲ)
- لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ (Ⅳ)
- No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication: (Ⅵ)
56. 20  
and such fruits as they shall choose,
- Wafakihatin mimma yatakhayyaroona (Ⅰ)
- And fruits such as they choose, (Ⅱ)
- And fruit that they prefer (Ⅲ)
- وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ (Ⅳ)
- And with fruits, any that they may select: (Ⅵ)
56. 21  
and such flesh of fowl as they desire,
- Walahmi tayrin mimma yashtahoona (Ⅰ)
- And the flesh of fowl and any as they desire. (Ⅱ)
- And flesh of fowls that they desire. (Ⅲ)
- وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ (Ⅳ)
- And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire. (Ⅵ)
56. 22  
and wide-eyed houris
- Wahoorun AAeenun (Ⅰ)
- And pure, beautiful companions, (Ⅱ)
- And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes, (Ⅲ)
- وَحُورٌ عِينٌ (Ⅳ)
- And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes,- (Ⅵ)
56. 23  
as the likeness of hidden pearls,
- Kaamthali allului almaknooni (Ⅰ)
- The like of the well-preserved pearls: (Ⅱ)
- Like unto hidden pearls, (Ⅲ)
- كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ (Ⅳ)
- Like unto Pearls well-guarded. (Ⅵ)
56. 24  
a recompense for that they laboured.
- Jazaan bima kanoo yaAAmaloona (Ⅰ)
- A reward for what they used to do. (Ⅱ)
- Reward for what they used to do. (Ⅲ)
- جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ (Ⅳ)
- A Reward for the deeds of their past (life). (Ⅵ)
56. 25  
Therein they shall hear no idle talk, no cause of sin,
- La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwan wala tatheeman (Ⅰ)
- They shall not hear therein vain or sinful discourse, (Ⅱ)
- There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination (Ⅲ)
- لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا (Ⅳ)
- Not frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill,- (Ⅵ)
56. 26  
only the saying ´Peace, Peace!´
- Illa qeelan salaman salaman (Ⅰ)
- Except the saying, "Peace! Peace!" (Ⅱ)
- (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace. (Ⅲ)
- إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا (Ⅳ)
- Only the saying, "Peace! Peace". (Ⅵ)
56. 27  
The Companions of the Right (O Companions of the Right!)
- Waashabu alyameeni ma ashabu alyameeni (Ⅰ)
- And the companions of the right hand; what of the companions of the Right Hand! (Ⅱ)
- And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand ? (Ⅲ)
- وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ (Ⅳ)
- The Companions of the Right Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Right Hand? (Ⅵ)
56. 28  
mid thornless lote-trees
- Fee sidrin makhdoodin (Ⅰ)
- Amid thornless Lote-trees, (Ⅱ)
- Among thornless lote-trees (Ⅲ)
- فِي سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ (Ⅳ)
- (They will be) among Lote-trees without thorns, (Ⅵ)
56. 29  
and serried acacias,
- Watalhin mandoodin (Ⅰ)
- And tall trees with clusters of flowers (or fruits) one above another. (Ⅱ)
- And clustered plantains, (Ⅲ)
- وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ (Ⅳ)
- Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another,- (Ⅵ)
56. 30  
and spreading shade
- Wathillin mamdoodin (Ⅰ)
- And spreading shade, (Ⅱ)
- And spreading shade, (Ⅲ)
- وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ (Ⅳ)
- In shade long-extended, (Ⅵ)
56. 31  
and outpoured waters,
- Wamain maskoobin (Ⅰ)
- And water flowing constantly, (Ⅱ)
- And water gushing, (Ⅲ)
- وَمَاءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ (Ⅳ)
- By water flowing constantly, (Ⅵ)
56. 32  
and fruits abounding
- Wafakihatin katheeratin (Ⅰ)
- And abundant fruit, (Ⅱ)
- And fruit in plenty (Ⅲ)
- وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ (Ⅳ)
- And fruit in abundance. (Ⅵ)
56. 33  
unfailing, unforbidden,
- La maqtooAAatin wala mamnooAAatin (Ⅰ)
- Neither intercepted nor forbidden, (Ⅱ)
- Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden, (Ⅲ)
- لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ (Ⅳ)
- Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden, (Ⅵ)
56. 34  
and upraised couches.
- Wafurushin marfooAAatin (Ⅰ)
- And exalted thrones. (Ⅱ)
- And raised couches; (Ⅲ)
- وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ (Ⅳ)
- And on Thrones (of Dignity), raised high. (Ⅵ)
56. 35  
Perfectly We formed them, perfect,
- Inna anshanahunna inshaan (Ⅰ)
- Surely We have created them into a new creation, (Ⅱ)
- Lo! We have created them a (new) creation (Ⅲ)
- إِنَّا أَنشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنشَاءً (Ⅳ)
- We have created (their Companions) of special creation. (Ⅵ)
56. 36  
and We made them spotless virgins,
- FajaAAalnahunna abkaran (Ⅰ)
- And made them virgins pure, (Ⅱ)
- And made them virgins, (Ⅲ)
- فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا (Ⅳ)
- And made them virgin - pure (and undefiled), - (Ⅵ)
56. 37  
chastely amorous,
- AAuruban atraban (Ⅰ)
- Loving friends, equals in age, (Ⅱ)
- Lovers, friends, (Ⅲ)
- عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا (Ⅳ)
- Beloved (by nature), equal in age,- (Ⅵ)
56. 38  
like of age for the Companions of the Right.
- Liashabi alyameeni (Ⅰ)
- For the sake of the companions of the right hand. (Ⅱ)
- For those on the right hand; (Ⅲ)
- لِّأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ (Ⅳ)
- For the Companions of the Right Hand. (Ⅵ)
56. 39  
A throng of the ancients
- Thullatun mina alawwaleena (Ⅰ)
- A multitude of those of old, (Ⅱ)
- A multitude of those of old (Ⅲ)
- ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ (Ⅳ)
- A (goodly) number from those of old, (Ⅵ)
56. 40  
and a throng of the later folk.
- Wathullatun mina alakhireena (Ⅰ)
- And a multitude of those of later times. (Ⅱ)
- And a multitude of those of later time. (Ⅲ)
- وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْآخِرِينَ (Ⅳ)
- And a (goodly) number from those of later times. (Ⅵ)
56. 41  
The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!)
- Waashabu alshshimali ma ashabu alshshimali (Ⅰ)
- And those of the left hand; what of those of the Left Hand? (Ⅱ)
- And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand ? (Ⅲ)
- وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ (Ⅳ)
- The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? (Ⅵ)
56. 42  
mid burning winds and boiling waters
- Fee samoomin wahameemin (Ⅰ)
- In hot wind and boiling water, (Ⅱ)
- In scorching wind and scalding water (Ⅲ)
- فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ (Ⅳ)
- (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, (Ⅵ)
56. 43  
and the shadow of a smoking blaze
- Wathillin min yahmoomin (Ⅰ)
- And the shade of black smoke, (Ⅱ)
- And shadow of black smoke, (Ⅲ)
- وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ (Ⅳ)
- And in the shades of Black Smoke: (Ⅵ)
56. 44  
neither cool, neither goodly;
- La baridin wala kareemin (Ⅰ)
- Neither cool nor honourable. (Ⅱ)
- Neither cool nor refreshing. (Ⅲ)
- لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ (Ⅳ)
- Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: (Ⅵ)
56. 45  
and before that they lived at ease,
- Innahum kanoo qabla thalika mutrafeena (Ⅰ)
- Surely they were before this made to live in ease and plenty. (Ⅱ)
- Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury (Ⅲ)
- إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ (Ⅳ)
- For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), (Ⅵ)
56. 46  
and persisted in the Great Sin,
- Wakanoo yusirroona AAala alhinthi alAAatheemi (Ⅰ)
- And they persisted in the great violation (or great sin). (Ⅱ)
- And used to persist in the awful sin. (Ⅲ)
- وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنثِ الْعَظِيمِ (Ⅳ)
- And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! (Ⅵ)
56. 47  
ever saying, ´What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up?
- Wakanoo yaqooloona aitha mitna wakunna turaban waAAithaman ainna lamabAAoothoona (Ⅰ)
- And they used to say, "What! When we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? (Ⅱ)
- And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, (Ⅲ)
- وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ (Ⅳ)
- And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- (Ⅵ)
56. 48  
What, and our fathers, the ancients?´
- Awa abaona alawwaloona (Ⅰ)
- "Or our fathers of yore?" (Ⅱ)
- And also our forefathers ? (Ⅲ)
- أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ (Ⅳ)
- "(We) and our fathers of old?" (Ⅵ)
56. 49  
Say: ´The ancients, and the later folk
- Qul inna alawwaleena waalakhireena (Ⅰ)
- Say, "The first and the last, (Ⅱ)
- Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time (Ⅲ)
- قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ (Ⅳ)
- Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, (Ⅵ)
