Eihei Dogen : Biography

The most important Zen Master, and considered Japan's "greatest religious figure," was Eihei Dogen (1200-1253). He was the founder of the Soto school, whose emphasis is on gradual enlightenment through the practice of pure meditation called shikan-taza, an alert, thought-free state of awareness, sometimes called "the mind of someone facing death."
